When people compare natural deodorants, most of the conversation goes straight to ingredients. But the format the product actually comes in — tin, jar or stick — makes a real difference to how (and how often) you'll actually use it. It's a less talked about decision, but it affects your daily routine just as much as what's in the formula.
The tin or jar format
A lot of natural deodorants come in a tin or jar, applied by scooping a small amount out with your fingers and warming it between your hands before applying. It photographs well and can feel more "natural" or artisanal on a shelf.
In practice, it comes with a few trade-offs. You're putting your fingers into the product every time, which is less hygienic and can introduce bacteria back into the tin. It's harder to apply quickly if you're getting ready in a hurry or reapplying during the day. And balm-style formulas in a tin can soften or melt in a hot car, gym bag or Australian summer, which changes the texture and makes it messier to use.
The stick format
Si:zen is designed to swipe straight onto skin — no scooping, no fingers in the product, no warming it up first. It's built for the reality of getting ready in the morning or reapplying after the gym, not a slower self-care ritual.
We haven't pretended our packaging has been perfect from day one, though. Our original 45g launched in cardboard because we wanted to start with a lower-impact option. After real feedback from customers — packaging softening in bags, cars and warmer conditions — we moved to a more durable material so the product would hold up properly for everyday use. That wasn't a decision we made lightly, because sustainability matters to us, but we didn't want to keep customers using packaging that was letting the formula down.
What we're doing about it
We're actively exploring compostable packaging for the next generation of Si:zen, but most compostable suppliers require minimum order quantities that aren't realistic for a brand our size yet — often around 200,000 units in one run. Rather than overstate where we're at, we'd rather be upfront: we're not there yet, but it's an active priority as we grow, not something we've quietly dropped.
Which one is right for you
If hygiene, speed and reliability in the heat matter most to you, a stick format is going to fit better into daily life. If you don't mind the extra step and prefer the tin experience, that's a genuinely valid preference too — it's not a right-or-wrong choice, just a question of what fits your routine.
